It is not an easy process to try and find a reputable locksmith to work in your home and create keys for your most valuable assets. There is many associations that locksmiths can be a part of, but the main organisations are the ICL (institute of Certified locksmiths) and the MLA (master locksmith association) of which both have their members police checked. If you are not 100% sure of the locksmith, you can check their credentials on the organisations website.
• If you are locked out, and need to get into your property/ vehicle, always ask if they are going to drill your lock, if yes, ask if they are going to repair or replace it for free? Many locksmiths will always drill your locks regardless of if it is possible to pick the lock, this is a method they use so they can charge you more money and you then buy a replacement lock from them too. Locks are always pick-able unless you have a really high security lock, so drilling is not always accessible.
• Always ring around for quotes, and ask exactly what type of lock they will fit, the brand, model number etc. It is easy to say you are getting a chubb lock, but the prices for them vary massively.
• Ask how long their work is guaranteed for, if anything goes wrong with the new lock, or how it is fitted its important that you are covered.
• Check for public liability
• Ensure they bring all the bits they will need, as they will charge you if you they need to go and get some more pieces.
• Pre-agree a price for the work they are going to take on, admittedly they will not be able to give you an exact price over the phone but they will be able to give you a rough price, so you have no nasty shocks.
